STORE CHECK - GUIDEBOAT, CO - MILL VALLEY, CA

Growing up in the Adirondacks, many of Stephen Gordon’s fondest memories are of early morning rows on Lake Champlain and of 19th century Guideboats on the waters of the Upper St Regis and Loon Lakes. Acquiring a rare 1892 J.H. Rushton Guideboat a few years back he became intrigued with the idea of helping others create similar memories, young and old alike plying the waters. Gordon decided to build a new Guideboat, an identical Rushton hull design, an affordable rendition, American cherry trimmed, bronze fittings, hand made.

Gordon, no stranger to edited assortments having founded Restoration Hardware, was joined by Chad Hurley co-founder of YouTube, in launching a new Mill Valley, California based concept…a way-of-life purveyor, online and in store. In addition to the Guideboat, the company now builds a turn-of–the-century Maine Peapod and the 1949 Naples Sabot. The company flagship, workshop and offices are all housed in the 19th century historic Mill Valley Lumber Yard.

The northern California flagship store opened in September of 2013 and is comprised of two handsomely restored late 19th century buildings within the historic Mill Valley Lumberyard. They selected and directed the rebuilding of the original mercantile building and the old hardware store, both graced by redwoods, bay and birch, adjacent to Mill Creek, moments from the bustle of Mill Valley’s Plaza yet a world away experientially. Guideboat’s workshop, where they now paint oars and paddles and fit componentry of our boats is built (as is the hardware store) right over the creek and housed within the property’s old woodshop. BARBOUR DEPT B INTRODUCING CAPT. PHILLIPS

I recently visited the Dutch agent of Barbour, and had a sneak peek at the Fall/Winter 2014
collection. The Barbour Heritage Line also called Dept. B, (which was an area of Barbour’s factory that specialised in customisation and repairs.) brings homage to Capt. Phillips.

Captain George Phillips took command of the submarine HMS Ursula in 1937. Submariners wore general Royal Navy issue clothing, and he felt dissatisfied with the existing protective clothing. Through observing one of his crew wearing a one piece Barbour suit, he privately approached Barbour and commissioned a modification of a one-piece suit into a new two-piece design of jacket and separate trousers. This prototype was produced at Captain Phillips' own expense for the crew of his own submarine, HMS Ursula. Captain Phillips is indeed wearing the jacket of his design in the photograph above dated 1939.

This small capsule has some great looking jackets with nautical details and what to think about a beacon in the cloth. Down Periscope, where going under.

SPERRY A PASSION FOR THE SEA

Inventor Paul Sperry
How it all begun
Advertisements from the past
JFK and Paul Newman made boatshoes popular
The Authentic Original aka A/O
It's all about details
Collaborations with Band of Outsiders, Penfield and Jeffrey's

It all started when Paul Sperry bought himself a Nova Scotia Schooner back in the 30s. He learned that a wet deck was very hazardous with ordinary sneakers even with crepe soles which were fine on a dry deck but felt like roller skating when wet. On a winter's day in Connecticut he let his cocker spaniel dog Prince out for a morning exercise, he seemed to have no trouble running all over the snow-covered backyard. Mr. Sperry looked at the paws of his dog and saw little cracks or cuts going in all directions. An idea was born. He took a piece of rubber, cut it with a penknife, and cemented it under an ordinary pair of sneakers. These wave-like grooves became the inspiration for Mr. Sperry's latest patent, called Razor-Siping and maximized the traction. The Authentic Original Sperry Top-Sider was first introduced in 1935, sold for $ 4,50 a pair from a rented office space in New Haven, CT. Every pair was sold via direct mail, upon a certain moment that Abercrombie & Fitch placed an order, and Mr. Perry gave them the exclusive rights in New York. The popularity of Sperry as a casual shoe grew after WWII. During the 1950s when the restrictions on the use of rubber were lifted and the fact that pictures of John F. Kennedy and Paul Newman in boatshoes where spread around the world, made people want to look like their idol. Today, more then 75 years later, the brand has some great collaborations going on with Band of Outsiders, Penfield and Jeffrey's just to name a few. "Sperry a passion for the sea"
