THE GREENLAND JACKET No. 1 - SPECIAL EDITION

An early version of the jacket put to the test.

Fjallraven's most classic jacket, the Fjallraven Greenland No. 1 jacket, here in its original design after founder Ake Nordin sewed the first jacket using a durable tent fabric at home in Örnsköldsvik in 1968.

This simple early version was created for climbers and has two breast pockets. (The side pockets on the Greenland Jacket were added in a later version after the jacket grew in popularity among a wider outdoor public in the 1970s.) Fixed hood, zipper with flap in the front and buttoned adjustments in the sleeve cuffs. The fabric is the durable, wind and water resistant G-1000 Eco that breathes well and can be impregnated with Greenland Wax for extra protection from the wind and rain. (pics via Freshcotton)
The special edition comes in 4 different colors.

This special edition has been seen on Orlando Bloom.

Fjällräven Numbers

In the early days of Fjällräven, all the products were numbered. The Numbers series takes up this tradition again in honour of the heritage of the brand and the man who started Fjällräven in the 1960's Åke Nordin. The numbers used in the Numbers series show how many preeccessors each product has had. Jacket No. 68 is the latest in a long line of functional hardwearing, outdoor shell jackets. The fabrics and details have been carefully chosen to minimise environmental impact. Zippers can be easily replaced after many years of wear. Most leather straps are made from reclaimed scraps and buttons are made of bamboo. The collection is designed with all four seasons in mind and makes mixing and matching of the layers possible. It all starts with a Grandpa's woolen undershirt and ends with Anorak No. 8 an advanced trekking anorak for all four seasons. I had lots of fun working with the products, thanks to Fjällräven, Holland who lend me the products.

FJALLRAVEN - WAX IN, WAX OUT

After a Swedish climbing expedition to Greenland in 1966, it became obvious that the selection of outdoor clothing was much to limited. Using an unusually durable fabric that had proven itself too heavy for the lightweight tents of the time, Fjällräven's founder Åke Nordin, made a climbing jacket - the first Fjällräven jacket. After adding a beeswax and paraffin mixture, the fabric turned out to be perfect for functional outdoor clothing. It was named G-1000 (G for Greenland) and the wax was called Greenland wax. I visited the showrooms of Fjällräven in Holland, during some cup's of coffee Thomas Koster told me everything about the history of the brand, the functionality of the products and showed me how G-1000 works on a remake of the first Greenland (called Greenland No 1). The brand placed waxed stations (as seen on the picture) in some major stores, just to explain to the costumer how to play around with the Greenland wax. Different weather conditions means different use of the wax. And of course  they have the Kanken in the showroom as well. Pick your color whether you like funky colors or just a basic color you name it. it's there. Ps. I like the wooden sculpture of the Arctic Fox, it all  comes together, the logo of the brand, outdoor and nature.

THE ARTIC FOX

The Swedish Flag of Kånken Backpacks
The Greenlander Parka

50th Anniversary Backpack

Fjällräven (wich means the arctic fox) has equipped the Swedes for over fifty year now. What started in a small cellar in Örnsköldsvik by the company’s founder Åke Nordin and what seemed to be a simple idea: “To make nature more accesible for people”, paved a way for a great success. Fjällräven makes truly classic outdoor clothing. There is a heritage and a touch of vintage to them and it’s not uncommon for many of the Fjällräven products to be handed down from one generation to the next. They have been copied by many, like the “Greenland Jacket”, a mountain parka from 1968 which originally was made out of tent fabric like the Fjällräven Vintage rucksack, the Kånken has been a staple of schoolchildren all over the world since 1978. Year after year, both the mountain parka and the rucksack along with many other products still remain as part of the Fjällräven collection. Functionality along with great design never goes out of style!
