LIFE MAGAZINE COVERS FROM A FASHION POINT OF VIEW

Life magazine, is an American magazine that ran weekly from 1883 to 1972, published initially as a humor and general interest magazine. Time founder Henry Luce bought the magazine in 1936, solely so that he could acquire the rights to its name. Life was a weekly news magazine with a strong emphasis on photojournalism. We all know these icon covers with JFK on a sailing boat and a sailor who kisses a nurse. I tried to look at their covers with a fashion eye and I found some great covers with fashion statements which are still relevant. Like the first cover with the Japan jacket, Ernest Hemingway in his striped T-shirt or Mr Fonda in his camel coat who for sure inspired Kanye West.

BIKES ON FLORIDA SANDS - DAYTONA 1948

For years, since the start in 1937 until the early 60's, the prestigious Daytona 200 motorcycle race was run on Daytona Beach instead of the Daytona Race track.
The 1948 event was covered by Life magazine and reported that 155 motorcycles started and only 45 finished. Wining rider, Floyd Emde, averaged 84 mph got $2000,--. He won with a thin margin of 12 seconds. 1948 was the first time a rider led the race from flag to flag, and it was the last time an Indian Motorcycle won the 200. It's a great story but for me it's the pictures who speak.
