THERE'S A NEW "MANN" IN TOWN

Michael Nijhof is the proud and enthusiastic owner of the recently opened store MANN.

He started several years ago in the fastest growing city of Holland, called Almere. Soon he got the possibility to take over the store. But it's the same when you are moving into your girlfriends place, it ain't your furniture and your colors on the wall. When he got the opportunity this winter to move to another location, he took this chance with both hands. The store is filled with industrial fittings, for the wall units he used 10 meter long old beams from demolished houses. The jeans wall is build from old wooden ladders, and they make a perfect display for the collection of Red Seal, Lee and Edwin. Michael showed me a vintage Lee Overall and a vintage Lee Jeans and told me the story of it. He is proud to have brands with a story like, Lee, Edwin, Denham, Ralph Lauren, Stone Island and Sorel. Michael gave me a scoop, for Fall 2012, he selected a fine collection of GANT Rugger. (Ps Michael, don't forget the Buddy Lee's for me).

Johan Lindeberg founded the J.Lindeberg brand in 1996. He had been the marketing director of Diesel and decided that he wanted to create something of his own. Whilst traveling through Europe on his motorcycle he visualized a fashion brand that reflected his personal and creative values as much as his own identity. A brand that he would love to wear himself, a brand he couldn't find anywhere else. The first time I got in contact with the brand Mitchumm Industries was at The Capsule Show, Paris. They presented a full range of shirts and scarfs all stone washed with BIO wash. All shirts come with 100% mother of pearl buttons. A cool detail on the shirt is that the last button is made in a red heart-shaped button (damn, wish I had a picture to show you). The brand is a tribute to California and the American actor Robert Mitchum, the brand was born in 1976 on the West Coast in Manhattan Beach near Los Angeles. started with some T-shirts and printed swimtrunks. Since 1983 the collection is in Italian hands and expanded to a full range. Alessandro Tino melts the best of both worlds, the American roots and the "made in Italy" identity.

In September 2008, Mama Shelter opened it's doors, this restaurant and hotel is designed by the famous designer Phillipe Starck. The location of the restaurant is in the heart of the Village Saint Blaise (20th arrondissement) a picturesque area of Paris, here you can still find cobblestone streets and ateliers.

The restaurant has a great mix of guest, young, hip and trendy people but also some older guests. Just like the chairs they use from old school chairs to Tolix chairs etc. The waiters are dressed in a great denim apron. The food is great I enjoyed a great steak and my friend an Iberico ham. It was a great night, great food, great atmosphere, friendly personal but I didn't get what that overage DJ and his freestyle buddies did there. Ps we got a great tip from the waitress for a drink and a dance......Favela Chic, that was awesome!!

Today I spent some hours at the Capsule Paris, this was my first visit and I was surprised by the great atmosphere, nice people, perfectly dressed, not to peacocky but just right. Nice selection of brands some well known, some with a heritage and some unknown and undiscovered. You could easily look through the collections with a sales guy hanging in your neck. I found some new brands (new for me) which I will introduce to you later. for now enjoy the pictures.

I just packed my bag for my trip to Paris, tomorrow Chad's best friend and I will hit the road to the fashion capital of the world. The iPod is packed with "Chansons Francaises" and the newest dance. After arrival we will hit the "must see" stores of Paris. On sunday we will visit the Capsule Show Paris and as I already said I can't wait to see what fashion will bring for F/W 2012 with my own eyes. In 1979 a movie by Franc Roddam produced by the Who becomes a cult, representing a phenomenon that is the symbol of the made in England of the Sixties. Palmer Trading Company is a store which opened in 2010 by Willy Chavaria and David Ramirez, longtime flea market aficionados, it takes its name from Palmer, Mass. where they have a house. You can find Palmer Trading leather goods and vintage items, shoes from East land, Tellason jeans etc. The shop looks very cozy with the fleamart finds tile flooring and tin ceiling. As 2011 comes to it's end it time to look forward to a new season "Spring/Summer 2012". Above you see some pictures from the Engineerd Garments lookbook. Japanese designer Daiki Suzuki (I don't know whether he is family of "the Suzuki")founded Engineered Garments in New York in 1999. Engineered Garments clothing is influenced by American Sportswear, Outdoor Clothing and Military Uniform. Taking its name from brands first pattern maker who remarked that the clothing was engineered as apposed to designed. Engineered Garments philosophy is based around bringing the detailing, often looked over in modern menswear, back with a focus on authenticity.

Wow, today I received a great Christmas present. I was aware of the notebooks from Moleskine and Fieldnotes,but I never heard about this beauty. It's a Traveler's Notebook by Midori. The leather covers are made by hand. Roughly cut leather and a rubber band with the clasp made of tin. The inside notebook is made in Japan and has Midori's original paper made to pursue the highest comfortability to write. Thanks to the people from Prima Image Consultants my desk will soon look like the picture above.

As I already told you I went to Stockholm to see the Fall/Winter collection of Gant. On Cafe.se I found these beautiful pics of the Gant Rugger collection.Christopher Bastin has been inspired by the restaurant environments in New York. From the colors of a dish on his plate, to interiors, the way the chef acts, kitchen utensils and the font of the printed menu. He build the collection around the chef and the waiter. And YES it was a Gant Rugger apron at Daphne's.

DAPHNE'S, STOCKHOLM

Last week, during my stay in Stockholm, I got a tip to visit Daphne's. This is an elegant neighborhood restaurant with French bistro atmosphere and lots of charm. You can find the dish of the day on a blackboard on the wall or you choose from the menu. You can easily spent an evening with the tapas style dishes from the "smatt & gott" menu or you choose a delicious starter with main course from the same menu. The waiters are stylish girls and guys dressed in shirt from GANT Rugger with a denim self edge apron. Is there something cooking?

Club Monaco, recently opened it's new store concept in Toronto. As you all know Club Monaco is a part of the Ralph Lauren Company. With it's new concept it takes a step in the direction of J.Crew. Not just the interior, but also the visual merchandise has been influenced by the men's stores of J.Crew. For the very first time Club Monaco brings 3rd party brands like Tricker's, Tanner Goods and Clarks. The highlight of the men's shop was the launch of the Made in the USA collection curated by Michael Williams of A Continuous Lean. Man do I like the staircase with the grey panelling and art.

Matt Smith signed a short term lease in Bucktown, Chicago to open a "pop-up" vintage store.

Matt created his taste working at Ralph Lauren. Over years spent shopping flea markets around the country, he culled his collection of classic, rugged Americana for guys and gals. You can expect walls with wood signs from local artist Jake Turner, shop racks of Levi's and Wrangler denim jackets for toddlers and up, Woolrich cardigans, flannels etc. So hurry to Vintage Smith, 2041 North Damen Ave, Chicago, IL. before it's too late. The last time I visited New York, I bought myself 2 paperweights at J.Crew a lobster and a map of the city.

Today was the last day of the 4th Pop Up Flea, New York. Michael Williams (from ACL) and Randy Goldberg brought some great brands together at 159 Bleecker Street. New York. Brands like L.L. Bean Signature, Red Wing Heritage, Levi's Vintage Clothing, Billykirk, Gitman Vintage, Grown & Sewn, Pierrepont Hicks and many more gave "act the presence" for 3 days in a row. It's a great initiative of 2 guys to organize such an event. Would this be possible in Holland aswel?

Recently J.Crew opened it's 4 Men' Shop @ Time Warner Centre, New York. These men stores are so intresting due to a well curated collection. J.Crew's own label mixed with brands like Alden, Barbour, Belstaff, Drake's, New Balance, Quoddy, Thomas Mason and many many more. But don't expect this atmosphere in every middle of the road J.Crew or you will be disappointed.

GANT Rugger presented their Spring/Summer 2012 collection in London in a "Gallery" way. The collection was shown in the Elms Lesters Painting Rooms, the Painting Rooms are historic studios, aged over the past hundred years, thick with paint-flecked walls. I can imagine that this was the perfect place to present the brand. I'm filled with envy, wish we had an event like this in Holland. (pics via Preposity & Rippedbackpocket)

BROOKS "YOUNGER " BROTHER

Last week, Brooks Brothers opened up its Flatiron Concept Store, situated in New York's first Skyscraper at 175, Fifth Avenue. Brick walls and wooden beams are exposed. This store is "Not Your Dadddy's Brooks Brothers" it's geared for a younger customer. The store showcases an assortment of men's and woman's sportswear including Levi's jeans.
